Can anyone tell me whether the blood test for rabies antibodies can be carried out by a bulgarian vet. As I see it to go to Bg you only need rabies vac and passport it is only if you want to return to UK that you need antibody lab check. I know this check has to be done a month after 2nd jab but it would save waiting another 6-8weeks

I don't think so. Friend's that are bringing their dog across have to take him back to UK vets for antibody check to make sure Rabies vaccination has taken before they can get official papers to bring him across. Pretty sure you need check in UK before you can bring pets across Europe to here.

somewhere on another forum a dog was just given jab and passport to go to Bg. This is fine the problem arises if I want to come back then the UK would need proof of antibody test on passport. I suppose once I've visited BG in a couple of weeks I will have a better idea.

I'll speak to friends coming over for 3 months with their dog and then going back to UK as they are all sorted and only took a month or so.

Hi back again. Things fell through last year but still trying to get there. It is true that you can leave UK 21days after rabies vac to go to BG if you are not returning to uk. However if you change your mind ie want to come back to UK it cannot be before 6months after a positive antibody test for rabies. So does anyone know how much a dog blood test is in BG. Sorry don't like to sound stingy but I have 3 dogs and many other things to spend my money on than UK vets.

I am actually replying to myself but thought others may like to know what I found. Yes it is possible to have blood test in Bulgaria but quotes for blood tests appear to be more expensive than here in UK. This is due to having to send samples off to a defra appointed lab. So no way around the expense unless I never come back to UK.

Not sure if anyone is reading this but I brought my two cats across, (I live here permenantly now - since Aug 08). The Vet in the UK gave completely the wrong advice, you only need a passport for your pet if you intend on going back to the UK, You don't need one to travel around the EU. My Vet in the UK is however £300 better off!

Cost for tests in BG is 250 levs as has to go to lab in Germany. You do need pet passports for travelling around Europe (EU). But no one really checks having driven from BG to France with dog. For non-EU need special certificate. To go back into UK need rabies blood test (seems around 100 to 150 E everywhere) and it is 6 months from date of test and cannot have gone outside EU countries in those 6 months.
