Sofia Echo - Monday 27th June 2011
Two of Bulgaria's most iconic Black Sea destinations, Zlatni Pyassutsi (the Golden Sands) resort by Varna in the north, and the town of Sozopol in the south, continue dumping their waste water directly into the sea, Dnevnik daily reported on June 27 2011.
The two resorts are considered as "critical points" along the Bulgarian seafront, as they both lack adequate facilities and infrastructure to deal with the matter effectively and in an environmentally friendly manner.
The lack of water and waste treatment stations, means that the resorts will continue dumping waste in the sea, a process which is referred to as "deep discharge," Environment and Water Minister Nona Karadjova said, cited by Dnevnik daily on June 27 2011.
"The season in both resorts will be saved this year thanks to deep water discharge of waste water," Karadjova said, adding that by the end of the year several contracts will be signed for the construction and modernisation of water and waste treatment stations in the country.
The contract for the construction of the waste treatment station in Elin Pelin is expected to be signed later this week, the report said.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Environment was present at the official launching of the new treatment station in the town of Devnya hear the phosphorus production plant Agropolychim on June 27 2011.
The facility is worth about 20 million leva, according to plant manager, Philip Rombald, while the entire Agropolychim investment for future waste management amounts to more than 100 million, Dnevnik said.
The plant has made projections to invest in the construction of a depot for phosphogypsum worth 16.5 million leva, as well as a new installation for the disposal of ammonium nitrate for 30 million leva, which should be operational by the end of 2011.
Expansion in the ammonia facility will swallow additional five million leva, while by March 2012, Agropolychim will launch the construction of liquid ammonia warehouse worth 30 million leva, which is scheduled for completion by March 2013.
